Books Acquired
Learn more about how Gaylor collected his books, both those in his physical collection and those he hoped to acquire. These cards preserve bibliographies, reviews in queer and mainstream periodicals, publisher information, and other traces of the networks through which Gaylor learned about desired titles.
“When it came on the market, I would buy the book, rather than eat.”

Gaylor’s reading habits were diverse and extensive. Apart from simply amassing the periodicals in his print collection, Gaylor scoured these publications like shopping lists for desiderata to add to his collection. These cited reviews noted on his cards come from magazines and newsletters spanning the 1960s through the mid 1990s, including publications intended for the local LGBTQ community, such as the Michigan-based Between the Lines, as well as national, general audience publications like U.S. Today.
