Children of owner Thomas Cole in front of Winkler Mill Three boys, children of Thomas Cole, sit in the grass outside Winkler Mill. The mill was first built in 1824 by John Hersey for processing flax and grist. The mill changed hands and purposes several times over the year, eventually becoming a grain mill under the ownership of Joseph Winkler in 1868. The mill closed in 1920, served as an antique shop between 1945 and 1961, and burned down in 1985.

Women workers and children inside the Western Knitting Mills Women workers and children inside the Western Knitting Mills, ca. 1917. The Western Knitting Mill opened in 1844 and served under this name until the 1920s. At that time it became the Rochester Textile Mills and has had many owners since that time. In 1998, it became home to the Rochester Mills Beer Company, the Rochester Eccentric Newspaper, and many others.
