Quality was not sacrificed for the sake of tight deadline when Meadow Brook Music Festival opened to the public 145 days after the groundbreaking ceremony. Unrivalled for its natural setting, acclaimed acoustic, and great classical programming, the Festival gained international recognition during its first season. Locally, the community rallied once ground had been broken in late winter. In March, 1964, the Rochester Board of Education voted to loan to Meadow Brook 2000 folding steel chairs, looking forward to as certain a devoted audience for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
